Cruiser kicked off ship for safety drill ‘non-compliance’
Seattle-based cruise line Holland America kicked a passenger off a ship this week for “non-compliance”
during a mandatory muster drill – an unusual incident that suggests a renewed focus on safety in the wake of the Costa Concordia disaster.
In a short statement sent to USA TODAY, Holland America offered few details on the nature of the non-compliance, other than citing a “failure to participate.”
The unnamed passenger was put off the line's 1,916-passenger Westerdam on Sunday in Ft. Lauderdale just before the ship set sail for the Caribbean.
“The drill included alarm blasts and announcements throughout the ship, including instructions that failure to participate would result in disembarkation,” the line says in the statement.
Cruise line policies on passenger safety drills have come under intense scrutiny since the Jan. 13 Costa Concordia accident, which resulted in at least 17 deaths.
At the time of the accident, there were nearly 700 passengers on the ship who had not received a safety briefing. The passengers, who had joined the vessel in Civitavecchia, Italy
just hours before it struck rocks and partly sank, had been scheduled to receive a safety briefing the next day.
